How To De-Ice Without Rock Salt

We’re not done with Winter yet, but it’s almost impossible to get rock salt lately. Morris County and most of the surrounding areas in NJ are drastically low on supplies. This can get dangerous quickly with all the melting and re-freezing that’s going on. What can you do if you can’t get a solution from the store? Fortunately there are alternatives. (When you’re a Realtor with homes for sale and no way to show them safely, you learn pretty quickly!)

First off, if you have a water softener or a pool, you may have some supplies on hand that will work in a pinch. The salt for water softeners is slower acting, but still effective in an icy situation. Pool supplies like calcium chloride and magnesium will also do double duty at de-icers. These are all more expensive than rock salt, but if you’re skating down your front walk it’s worth it!

Want a Crafty Recipe to Get Rid of Ice? Try This!

This recipe is cheap, easy and works fast! Give it a try and you’ll thank me!
Mix 1/2 Gallon of Warm Water with a Teaspoon or two of Dish Soap & 1 Tablespoon of Rubbing Alcohol. Pour over ice & watch it work!
The warmth of the water melts the ice, while the dish soap and alcohol keep it from re-freezing!
Stay safe out there! Spring will be here before we know it!
